Dune – Atreides Royal Ornithopter

Release date:

Feb 1, 2024

LEGO 10327 Dune – Atreides Royal Ornithopter is part of the LEGO Icons line, clearly aimed at adults and collectors. Released in 2023, it’s a licensed set from Legendary Entertainment based on the universe of Dune: Part One by Denis Villeneuve. With 1,369 pieces, the model faithfully recreates House Atreides' most iconic aircraft — the Ornithopter — with impressive mechanical complexity. Measuring around 57 cm in length with wings fully extended, it’s a striking model designed both for display and interaction, thanks to its functional flapping wing system. The set includes 8 exclusive minifigures: Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Chani, Leto Atreides, Liet Kynes, Duncan Idaho, and the fearsome Baron Harkonnen (with a special skirt piece that makes him hover).

Minifigure review

The minifigures are another strong point of the set. There are 8 in total, each with exclusive, highly detailed designs. Paul Atreides (dun001) wears a combat suit with front and back printing, and a serious facial expression that fits the character. Lady Jessica (dun002) stands out with a detailed printed tunic and exclusive hairpiece. Gurney Halleck (dun005) and Duncan Idaho (dun003) come with distinct armor and accessories that reflect their military roles in House Atreides. Chani (dun007) is styled with Fremen aesthetics and subtle outfit detailing. Liet Kynes (dun006) brings a more scientific, neutral look. Leto Atreides (dun004) has a noble and austere presence, complete with a cape and strong facial print. Lastly, Baron Harkonnen (dun008) is a standout — radically different from standard minifigures, his body “floats” thanks to a special transparent piece, and the printing captures his menacing, decadent presence perfectly. All figures add real value, both for display and for collectors.

About the

set

The Ornithopter is a true feat of LEGO engineering. The build features a variety of advanced techniques, especially in the retractable wings, which flap by turning a rear crank, easily one of the most satisfying play features in recent sets. The landing gear works beautifully through a rotating mechanism, activated by a simple twist of a gear element, and the flapping wings, while not a perfect replica, elegantly capture the motion and spirit of the vehicle from the film. It’s the complete package for anyone looking for a set that combines display impact with functional brilliance. The fuselage is packed with industrial detail and has a premium finish, using angular shapes that perfectly reflect the brutalist, utilitarian style of the Dune universe. The cockpit opens to seat minifigures, there’s room for several, but it’s best suited for just two. My only real complaint is the use of red Technic pins, which slightly disrupt the look, especially since those same parts exist in black and would have blended in much better.

Box design

he box is elegant and mature — black, with minimalist artwork showcasing the Ornithopter’s silhouette in flight against a dark backdrop. The front immediately conveys the epic and serious tone of the franchise, while the back highlights the minifigures and main play features. It’s one of those sets where keeping the box feels worth it for collectors.

Instruction manual

The instruction manual is well-made, printed on quality paper with clear visuals. The manual bring a brief resume about all minifigures and before the build begins, there's a brief introduction to the world of Dune and some words from the LEGO design team, explaining the challenges and excitement of bringing the Ornithopter to life in brick form. This narrative context helps immerse the builder from the start — especially for Dune fans. There’s also a clear breakdown of the mechanical wing function before its assembly, which is a nice technical touch.

So…

1

LEGO 10327 Dune – Atreides Royal Ornithopter is a prime example of how LEGO can blend engineering, cinema, and design into a single product. It’s a bold, challenging, and charismatic set, with a mechanical function that’s not just a gimmick but truly brings the model to life. This isn’t a beginner-friendly or everyday playset, but rather a display piece worthy of admiration — ideal for fans of Dune or advanced LEGO building. If you love serious sci-fi, this Ornithopter is a must-have — and yes, it looks incredible on a shelf or wall.
